| Sandur - an Oasis |
|
In 1991, Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra approached DASTKAR for assistance in areas of design and product development, marketing and skill training. Since then, Dastkar and other craft organisations have benefited the craftswomen in improving their earnings and living conditions.
Today, Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra has evolved over the years and gained recognition for this rural craft, both nationally and internationally. Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra produces Garments, Soft Furnishings (such as Wall-Hangings, Cushion Covers, Linen, Table Mats, etc.) and Accessories (such as Bags, Purses, Spectacle Cases, etc.) with traditional Sandur Lambani embroidery.
Today, there are 300 (three hundred) craftswomen benefiting from SKKK with an additional 100 (one hundred) under training. These artisans receive daily earnings which are then calculated as monthly earnings. They also receive various other worker benefits such as subsidised ration, bonus, provident fund, etc.
Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra is actively involved in the process of production with effective marketing strategies and other activities related to the development of the artisans concerned.

| Aims and Objectives |
|

|
It is the craftsperson, rather
than the craft, that is focal point of this kendra which realize
that the renaissance of arts and crafts can be brought about
only by training, developing, encouraging and compensating
the artists and crafts persons properly. The scope of Sandur
Kushala Kala Kendra also includes Khadi activities with
a view to assist the economically weaker sections of the society
in the area. |

| Chief Patron |
|
Shri.M.Y. Ghorpade the
former Minister Govt. of Karnataka firmly believes that an
industry owes a social and moral responsibility for the over
all development of the area where it is situated and accordingly
took personal interest in launching various socio-economic
development schemes including education, health, housing and
employment etc. for the benefit of the local people. His immense
urge to preserve arts and crafts of the region and save it
from the verge of extinction lead to the establishment of
Sandur Kushala Kala kendra. |
